Innovative road maintenance for the A4 Brescia-Padua

Last spring Gipave® was used for a maintenance intervention on the A4 Brescia-Padua motorway, in combination with a cutting-edge programming system which, thanks to a software platform, allows for efficient and effective maintenance interventions to be guaranteed, as well as to rationalize times and costs.

In detail, the maintenance work affected the stretch of the motorway from km 345+800 to km 351+300, in the municipalities of Mestrino, Villafranca Padovana and Rubano, in the province of Padua.

The A4 Brescia-Padova falls within the Trans-European Core Network Mediterranean Corridor (TEN network), which constitutes one of the road corridors with the highest traffic density, both passengers and goods.

In general, every motorway network, depending on the loads it supports, must guarantee high performance in order to ensure not only safety for users but also durability over time, extending maintenance interventions as much as possible.

With the aim of creating a highly performing pavement, whose road package would guarantee a useful life of 28 years, the A4 Holding Group (the company managing the motorway in question) decided to use Gipave®, a supermodifier containing graphene and hard plastics to specially selected recovery, for the binder layer of the slow travel and emergency lanes. Thanks to the use of Gipave it was possible to significantly increase the performance of the flooring (in fact, improvements can be seen in the parameters relating to stiffness modules, rutting and fatigue resistance), reduce the environmental impacts resulting from the reduction in the use of raw materials, to which is added the lowering of costs linked to the lower amount of maintenance.

The excellent results obtained from the laboratory checks carried out by the company carrying out the works, by the Works Management via Laboratories (PQRS-LTM), by Iterchimica and by the University of Padua testify to the effectiveness of the solution adopted.

The environment also thanks: CO emissions2eq are reduced by 42%, energy consumption by 34%, to which is added the saving of raw materials (if we consider the quantities of bitumen and aggregates saved, 67% of first-use material is saved).
