Inauguration of the bridge over the Danube in Braila, Romania

The Braila Bridge over the Danube River was inaugurated last July 6th and, to date, with its 1.975 meters it is not only the longest bridge in Romania but also the second longest suspension bridge in all of continental Europe. This infrastructural work connects the two banks divided by the Danube river in the Galati-Braila area, allowing motorists to reduce travel times from one bank to the other by 43 minutes (going from the 45 minutes needed before construction to just 2 minutes). This will allow approximately 7.000 vehicles per day to reach their destination in less time with consequent environmental savings.

The new road infrastructure has a central span of 1.120 meters and is made up of 4 lanes, with attached emergency lanes and pedestrian cycle paths. The width is 31,7 meters and the height above the river waters is 40 meters, allowing the passage of medium-sized ships.

The construction of the work was carried out by an international consortium led by WeBuild and was commissioned by CNAIR – Compania Nationala de Administrare e Infrastructurii Rutiere for the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. The project, financed by the European Operational Program for Large Infrastructure (POIM), involved the contribution of over 1350 people and 100 direct suppliers.

Also Iterchimica, leader in the development of products for long-lasting and sustainable asphalts, contributed to the construction of the bridge flooring: in fact, starting from last year it has supplied adhesion activators from the Iterlene line (almost 20.000 kg) and products for warm mixtures from the Iterlow line (almost 8.000 kg).

Adhesion activators are used to counteract the disintegrating action of water and guarantee perfect adhesion of the bitumen to the aggregate. In this way, it is possible to reduce deterioration of the pavement due to the lack of adhesion between aggregates and bitumen, allowing its duration to be extended (longer useful life). Furthermore, during the winter period, the adhesion activators facilitate the transport and compaction of the bituminous conglomerate.

The products for warm mixtures, on the other hand, allow the production, laying and compaction temperatures of the bituminous conglomerate to be lowered, allowing for significant energy savings and a notable reduction in atmospheric emissions. In fact, thanks to the use of these products, it is estimated that for one kilometer of road 10 m wide and 25 cm thick it is possible to save 10.000 kg of CO2eq in the atmosphere and 280.000 MJ of energy [1]. Furthermore, in hot production, they improve and maintain the workability of the bituminous conglomerate even in the presence of low external temperatures (below 5°C) and for long-distance transport.

Among other projects, Iterchimica has already collaborated with WeBuild on the occasion of the renovation of the Genoa San Giorgio Bridge, inaugurated in August 2020, supplying its products including Gipave, the supermodifier for asphalt containing graphene and hard recovered plastics.
