In November 2021, our rejuvenator Iterlene ACF 1000 HP Green was used in Serbia, more specifically in the city of Lajkovac, to carry out a test field on an access road connected to the IIB27 state road. The reference section involved the wearing course with the following dimensions: length of 51 m, width of 3 m and thickness of 4 cm.

The intervention was carried out by Strabag in cooperation with Iterchimica. The section concerned is part of a secondary road with little traffic.

The intent of the actors involved coincided with the use of a considerable amount of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP): in fact, cold recycling is a valuable tool for reducing the environmental impact of road construction. The reduction in energy required compared to traditional hot recycling generates significant savings in terms of costs and associated CO2 emissions.

In order to ensure the success of the project, the design of the mix included the study of the grain size curve and the bitumen content of the reclaimed asphalt. It is worth mentioning that for such 100% recycled mixes, the continuity of the curve is of crucial importance, as it affects the cohesion and durability of the mix. Afterwards, the technicians defined an initial mix design using the Marshall Method and the mix was subjected to ITS testing. The results of the tests performed on the mixes met the minimum specifications.

The new pavement was therefore laid and monitored over the following months: the section involved proved the effectiveness of the product not only as a pothole-patching solution or for minor maintenance work, but also to build a section of secondary road with 100% reclaimed asphalt.

Thanks to this project, considerable benefits were achieved in terms of energy savings and CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, not to mention the avoided extraction of raw materials and the use of first-use bitumen.

The pictures above represent the reference section at a distance of time: starting from the left, on the day the work was carried out, after 7 days and after 2 months.
