The road, the one that each of us travels every day, has always been green and sustainable for Iterchimica.

It is curious to think that, turning the clock back in time, talking about recycled material used to take on a negative meaning: we thought of it as a waste rather than an advantage.

Only in relatively recent times has the strong need to avoid waste and give waste a second life emerged.

Iterchimica had already thought about this and had realized that The right path to follow is the one also made with recycled material, avoiding the consumption of soil and raw materials, with the aim of increasing the performance of asphalt pavements and guaranteeing greater durability, in line with the principles of Green Economy.

Precisely for this reason, over the years, collaborations have arisen with Universities and Research Centres, increasingly refining skills in order to create innovative technologies for asphalt pavements that are primarily safe but also sustainable and long-lasting.

The solutions adopted by Iterchimica focus on recovery and recycling processes of existing asphalt pavements and on the use of innovative materials and production technologies that bring greater benefits than traditional methods.

The aim is to minimize the environmental impact linked to the production and laying of asphalt.

Green Tools for Designing the Infrastructures of the Future

Governments and NGOs are, today more than ever, constantly updated on the topic of the circular economy, savings and sustainability: already in 2015 the United Nations presented the 2030 Agenda, i.e. an action program that incorporates into its internally the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At European level, it is important to highlight the Action Plan for the circular economy which was followed by Green Deal, aimed at achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

In the wake of international and European regulations, Italy has defined its National Strategy for Sustainable Development.

The effectiveness of the Strategy consists in the tools that compose it, including the Green Public Procurement which literally directs Public Administrations towards Green Procurement; the Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM) and the End decrees of Waste which provide, although not yet fully approved, a virtuous management of waste in order to put it back on the market.

Finally, the PNRR, approved in 2021 thanks to the funds granted by Recovery Plan, offers significant funding and a broad spectrum of opportunities to relaunch various sectors (including the infrastructure sector).

At the moment, therefore, there are many opportunities to change course and start a real green transition.

There is still a long way to go yet, thanks to these future-oriented regulatory instruments and the economic resources reserved for green investments, is possible, encouraging collaboration between all parties involved, create sustainable infrastructure reducing environmental impacts by up to 70%.

A Road Towards Sustainability

Day after day, man's impact depletes the Earth of essential resources for life, complicating the existence of future generations.

Every year the resources used are greater than those the Earth is able to generate due to the continuous growth of the population, the increase in demand for raw materials and the increase in inequality in less wealthy nations.

If the trend does not change, by 2050 we would need to have three planets available to live in these conditions.

These premises are necessary to introduce a broader discussion: the need to orient current choices towards a green, circular and sustainable transition that can coherently manage the available resources, exploiting governmental regulatory tools and involving all parts of the social system that inhabits the Planet.
The challenge imposed by the ecological transition is contained in the ability to create sustainable, long-lasting and resilient products and to fully embrace the so-called circular economy: circular is a product which, at the end of its useful life, is not discarded but, thanks to its properties and its particular composition, is used in another way and acquires a new "intended use".

In light of these problems it is legitimate to ask:

Which road to take?

A question that Iterchimica has always asked itself and which translates into the path undertaken for over 50 years.

More than half a century of activity which has allowed us to develop green and circular skills and knowledge to improve the present and plan a better future.

SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS

During 2022, Iterchimica won the following sustainability awards which confirm the Company's commitment to its path of development and promotion of a business model attentive to sustainable growth and the interests of the next generations:

“Sustainable Development Award 2022”: the Foundation for sustainable development and Ecomondo-Italian Exhibition Group every year reward companies and start-ups that have distinguished themselves both for eco-innovation and for the effectiveness of their environmental and economic results and for their potential of diffusion. The sustainable development award is divided into three sections:

“Startup for the climate”
“Enterprise for the circular economy”
“Enterprise for natural capital”.

In the 12th Edition, Iterchimica was awarded among the top ten companies in the "Enterprise for the circular economy" sector, as further proof of the Company's commitment to the use of recycled materials and the development of products that enable the reuse/recycling of materials.

“Austrian Radio Ö1 Award – 'Reparatur der Zukunft' (Fixing the Future)”: the Austrian State Radio “Ö1” annually rewards the most far-sighted projects in the development of products that contribute to a better and greener future for the planet. The award ceremony takes place as part of the “Reparatur der Zukunft” (Fixing the Future) initiative. During the 2022 edition, Iterchimica was awarded for the development of Gipave, a patented polymer supermodifier, designed for sustainable and longer-lasting roads. This product was developed as part of the Ecopave project which also involved the University of Milan Bicocca, G. Eco (collection and selection of hard plastics) and Directa Plus (single-layer graphene production). Gipave has a reduced environmental impact as it is produced by reusing a specific type of hard plastic that would be destined for waste-to-energy. Roads built with Gipave are 100% recyclable in future production cycles and last more than 75% longer than the standard.
